Bike Week in Northumberland, June 1 to June 9

bike week 2013

(Cobourg, Ontario – May 14, 2013) The Bicycle Action Committee of Sustainable Cobourg (, along with the Northumberland Hills Cycling Club (NHCC) and Cycle Transitions, is sponsoring Bike Week in Northumberland County from June 1 to June 9 in order to promote cycling as a means of transportation, recreation, and fun. This year’s theme is to promote the appeal of cycling across the County. Therefore, there will be community rides in Port Hope, Warkworth, and Cobourg.

Bike Week kicks off on Saturday, June 1 (9:00 am-5:00 pm) with a Bike-A-Thon in front of Victoria Hall. Members of all three local bike clubs (Cobourg Cycling Club, Ganaraska Free Wheelers, and Northumberland Hills Cycling Club) will be pedalling on stationary bikes. Who knows, you might even catch a Cobourg Councillor or two doing a turn on the spin bikes.

Events continue with a community bike ride in Cobourg on Monday, June 3. Meet at 6:30 pm at the Bandshell in Victoria Park. Hosted by the NHCC, this group ride will be an easy, fun, family-oriented ride around the streets of Cobourg.

Tuesday, June 4 is the day for a community ride in Port Hope. Meet at Port Hope’s Town Hall at 6:30 pm for a leisurely paced ride, suitable for all, around the streets of Port Hope. (This event will be hosted by Port Hope Bicycle ( and the Northumberland Hills Cycling Club (

Saturday, June 8 finds the Bike and Gear Swap at Cycle Transitions, the Do-It-Yourself bike repair shop at 739 D’Arcy Street in Cobourg (across from Cobourg Community Centre).  Bikes, gear, you name it. Individuals and groups will be on hand with gear to buy, sell, or trade. Full details are found on the Cycle Transitions website (  The swap will be on-going all day, from 9 am until 5 pm.

The final event is a community ride in Warkworth on Sunday, June 9. Meet at the Percy arena at 1 pm and head out for a scenic and leisurely ride around the community of Warkworth. (Hosted by the Northumberland Hills Cycling Club)

As a fund-raiser in support of Bike Week, we are once again raffling off a bicycle. $5 for 1 ticket or $10 for 3 tickets buys a chance at a Fuji Absolute 2.1 Hybrid Bike (retail value of $530 – bicycle provided by Port Hope Bicycle). This is a great opportunity to move up to a comfortable but very capable bicycle. Annual memberships to NHCC (value $60) and Cycle Transitions are the other prizes up for grabs in the raffle. Tickets for the raffle are available at Cycle Transitions (739 D’Arcy Street ) or at any of the Bike Week events  ( The draw will take place on June 9, after the ride in Warkworth.
